Marion Martin
FLOYD COUNTY TIMES
OBITUARY
OF MARION MARTIN
Marion Martin was the
son of the late Johnnie and Annie Martin, who were pioneer citizens of Floyd
County. The old home was where the Elkhorn Cool Corporation store now stands
at Wayland.
He
was born June 3.1851, and died June 30, 1932, aged 81 years and 27 days. He
was one of the best-educated men of his day. He taught successfully in the
schools of Floyd County for several years, was county examiner for teachers'
certificates and was county surveyor.
He
was united in marriage to Caroline Mayo, a daughter of the late (the
article ends here and starts
again with where the couple lived) Middle Creek. This was a successful
marriage and they lived happily together until death separated them. To this
union were born ten children, six boys and four girls. And the children except
Willie. who died in infancy, survive together with his devoted wife. The
children are Lee Martin, Wayland. Ky. Mrs. Ben Webb, Allen, Ky.; Mrs. Willie
Johnson. Banner, Ky.; Lewis Martin, Ashland, Ky,; Walter Martin Wayland, Ky.;
Jennie Martin, Allen, KY.; Mrs. James Flanery, Allen. Ky.; Earl Martin and Dr.
Ernest Martin, Wayland. Ky.
Mr.
Martin was a devoted believer m the principles of Christianity and was for
many years a member of the Methodist Church. Only those who knew him best
could understand his pious life and scholarly mind. The following is from
the writings of his own hand, written a few days before his death and
found after his death by his daughter, Mrs. Ben Webb. He had lain it away in
his own dresser drawer.
"But
man, if controlled by a noble purpose and inspired by high ideals may purify
rather than be polluted by his surroundings, and by resistance to temptation
make the latter end of his life more beautiful even than the beginning was.
How like a human life, man flung into existence
without his volition, bearing the race
mark of his parents, carrying the impression of their lives to the day
of his death, hedged about by environments that shape and mold him before his
old enough to plan or to choose."
The
funeral services were conducted at Wayland,
Ky.. on Sunday July 3 by Revs. O. P. Smith. his pastor, A. L. Allen and V. Dd.
Hannon who were friends for many years to the deceased and to the family. All
the children and grandchildren were present as well
as a very large congregation of relatives, neighbors and mends. He was
buried in the old family cemetery on a. point near Wayland. "Blessed are
the dead that die in the. Lord from
henceforth; yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors.”
