note There is much confusing information about the father of Elizabeth. Her mother as shown in her death record was Rhoda Castle. Rhoda married Nathaniel Preston on January 03, 1866 in Johnson Co., KY. It was Nathaniel's third marriage. In the 1870 Johnson Co., KY census, Elizabeth Preston is listed as age 7 as Nathaniel's daughter in the household of him and Rhoda. Elizabeth was thought to be the daughter of Nathaniel and his second wife Marinda Stapleton who he married on January 20, 1864. However her death certificate lists her father as Newton Daniel and in the obituary of her son, Ivan VanHoose she is listed as Lizzie Daniel. To confuse matters even more on her marriage record to Lafayette VanHoose on March 02, 1884 in Johnson Co., KY she gave her name as Lizzie Preston. It appears as if her mother Rhoda Castle was married before or had Elizabeth by Newton Daniel. Lizzie at least at some point of her life thought her father was Nathaniel or just used the last name of Preston. |
