Introduction Martin, the original derivation of the name of Martin is from the Letin, Martius, meaning "warlike" in Gaelic, Mar means "great", and Duin, "a man", thus Marduin, the gaelic form of Martin signifies a warrior or cheif. It was first used as a baptismal name and was later adopted by the Sons of so called as their surname. Among the many variant spellings, of the name are Marten,Martain,Martinn,Marton,Martines,Martyne,Martein,Martain, Martine, and Martin, of which the last form was mentioned is that most generally accepted in Americia today. Some writers beleive the family's descent traceable back to St. Marten, the son of a Roman military tribune and later Bishop of Tours. However, since St. Martin died not later than 400 A.D. his connection with the present families of the name is uncertain. The first definite ancestor of the Martin was Martin de Tours, whose name appears in the roll of the battle of Abbey. He accompanied William the Conqueror to England in 1066 as a general officer in the army, and among the many rewards which he obtained were land in Devonshire and Somersetshire and the Barony of Cemmance, Caines, or Keymes in Pembrokeshire, Wales by his wife Geve, daughter and heiress of Serlo de Burci. Martin de Tours was possibily the father (although some authorities call him grandfather) of Robert Fitz Martin, who was the father by his wife Maud or Matilda,, widow of William Peverill or Peverel, of Sir Robert (of Devonshire) and Sir William Martin, of these Sir William Martin, Baron of Dartington, married Authort, a daughter of Groffydd, had issue o her of William and Oliver. Of these the latter founded Galway Ireland, branch of the family, while the first married Avice de Toriton, and was the father in Devonshire of Sir Nickolas who married Maud, daughter of Sir Guy de Brian, and was the father of, among others Sir William, who was summoned to Parliament in 1295 and became the first Lord Martin by his wife Eleanor, widow of Sir John de Mohum and daughter of Raynold Fitz-Pierrs, he was the father of Edmund or Edward, Sir William, Joan Eleanor. There were no male descendants of this line in the following generation. It is generally believed that most, if not all, of the Martins' common anscestors are from this remote period. One Caption John Martin accompanied Drake on his trip around the world in 1577; but the first of the name to settle in America was Christopher Martin, who came with his wife and son, Christopher, from County Essex,England, to Plymouth on the Mayflower in 1620. He and his family were however, among the many who died during the first hard winter in the colony. We cannot trace the descendants of William Martin before the date of 1760 and this is the date we start from in this book. Martin Descendants This book is the result of endless hours of study, travel, research and writing over a period of more than fifty years. I began taking notes on William Martin and his descendants from my father Alemander Martin about 1900. This book is written and dedicated to all the many thousands of descendants of William Martin whom it seems was born in Virginia about 1760, sixteen years before this country gained it's independence from England. I have carefully traced the blood and lineage of William Martin. This book then would cover a period of about 200 years, or approximately nine generations of Martins. These data have been taken from old family Bibles, Court House Deeds and Wills, Census and Marriage records, Chruch records, and hundreds of Martin relatives have been seen in person and corresponded with by mail in getting the information. I trust that you will forgive any mistake discovered, as it is about impossible to get completely accurate records on relatives who have long passed on. Birthdates, names and nicknames of long ago were not as important as they are today. I believe these records are very correct, and it does require much time and effort to properly trace your family back a few generations. However the system used in this book is one that is highly recommended by the leading genealogists of our nation. As I ride over this beautiful country, I see many beautiful homes and churches. I love to visit the many cemeteries where many of the Martins and relatives lie sleeping. It is interesting to study the monuments and markers. As I have made this study, it is a source of great happiness and pride as I think of all the contributions of those who have passed on. The Martins have been one of the greatest generations of all times, and have produced some of the greatest men and women in America. It isn't possible to list all their achievements in a book of this type, but they have contributed much to the religious, educational and economic growth of this part of America. With advancing age falling upon me, I must bring this record to an end, and get it published. I am now in my 80th year and much of my life has been spent in sickness, but I am thankful that the Lord has spared me this long. There are two great advantages in living: one is the value of time, and the other is the proper use of it. I have attempted to live a moral, clean life. I have always lived in fear of those things which are wrong, and have always dreaded the Good Lord's punishments for those who do not live a good life. I am thankful for this long life and the many blessings which have been mine. As I look backwards, and as I look ahead to years to come, I would like to quote a poem that has always been one of my favorites: Tomorrow's Bridges It is rickety think to view Its piers are crumbled, its rails are down Its floor would let me through The chasm its spans is dark and deep And its waters foam and fret I have crossed that bridge a thousand times Though I have never reached it yet It has crashed beneath me to let me through Although it is miles away. But strange the bridges that I have crossed Perhaps I shall find when I reach that one That lies in the distant blue. Some hand may have mended its rickety floor, And its piers may be strong and new And I can pass over it. Again, I would like to dedicate this book to all the descendants of William Martin that they might know more about their relatives. It is my sincere hope that one of my grand-children, viz. Kenneth Gayheart, or Hollie Martin Conley, or Walter Keith Salyers, or some other relative will make this a continued story in the next century. By writing a book No. 2 on William Martin, born 1760, descendants, and to start writing where I left off, which would be the "I's", which would be the sixth great-grandchild of William Martin, born 1760, and written in this book which in Number One, of William Martin, born 1760, and his descendants. William Martin was born about 1760 according to his will of 1832. William Martin was not recorded in the 1840 census, so he must have passed away before the 1840 census was taken. We think William Martin died at the age of 72, and his will in 1832 would have made him 72 years old. His wife, Susannah Tudor Martin, in the 1850 census, was living in Floyd County,Kentucky, with her baby boy, John Martin and his wife, Anna Gearhart Martin, Susannah Tudor Martin, born 1764, was 86 years old then, and was not recorded in the 1860 census, so evidently she had died before the 1860 census was taken, making her about 96 years old. William Martin and wife, Susannah Tudor Martin and family came from Virginia to Kentucky about 1806 and located at the mouth of Patton Branch on Right Beaver Creek, then in Floyd County, now Knott County, Kentucky, and bought his first tract of land from David Morgan on December 4, 1808, and this deed is recorded in Book A on page 8, in the Floyd County Court Clerk's Office, in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. This tract of land was William Martin's old homestead. Then William Martin began buying the first patent land and his sons began buying the patent to back lands making a large boundary of land beginning at or near the mouth of Rock Fork Creek in Floyd County, Kentucky, thence running up Right Beaver Creek so as to include all the land on each side of Right Beaver Creek up to the Richard Hall Branch; the deed corner is on the upper Rock Lick, opposite the mouth of Richard Hall Branch, about one mile above Dry Creek on Right Beaver Creek now in Knott land in Floyd County, Kentucky. Willam Martin and wife were buried in the Patton Fork area above Wayland, KY. George Martin, born 1835, a grandson of William Martin and Susannah Tudor Martin became the owner of a part of the old homestead of William Martin and George Martin sold this old homestead to Judge David "Bud" Martin by Deed bearing date of October 27, 1873, recorded in Deed Book Number One on page 340 in the Floyd County Court Clerks Office at Prestonsburg, Kentucky. Judge David "Bud" Martin's children own a part of this old William Martin homestead, near the mouth of Patton Branch on Right Beaver Creek in Knott, County, Kentucky. The Martins have kept title of this old Martin homestead from 1808 to the present date of 1960. A. William Martin, born about 1760, married Susannah Tudor Martin. 1B. David Martin born about 1784, thrice married: first wife, Millie Spradin; second wife Sallie Morris; third wife Fanny Rose. 2B. Susannah Martin born about 1788,married Eli Johnson on December 11, 1814, in Floyd County, Kentucky. 3B. Millie Martin born about 1790, married James Martin on February 18, 1811 in Floyd County, Kentucky. (Marriage record) 4B. Joel Martin born about 1792, married Rebecca Fletcher on March 15, 1812 in Floyd County, Kentucky; (Marriage record)second wife was Polly Morgan. 5B. Ann Martin born about 1794, married Patrick Johnson, June 13, 1813, in Floyd County, Kentucky (Marriage record) 6B. Rhoda Martin born about 1799, married Elder Jesse Adams on June 4, 1816, in Floyd County Kentucky.(Marriage record) 7B. Sallie Martin born about 1802, married Joe Gearhart, July 1, 1821 in Floyd County, Kentucky.(Marriage record) 8B. William Martin, Jr. born about 1803, married Rita Adams. 9B. John Martin born about 1807, married Anna Gearheart on November 1, 1831, in Floyd County, Kentucky.(Marriage record) These nine children of William Martin, Sr. and wife Susannah Tudor Martin, were born in Virginia, except John Martin William Martin made a will. We can not find the will but the record of the Floyd County Circuit Court shows that the will was contested in 1832. The 1810 census shows William Martin was over 45 years old and probably 50 years old when 1810 census taken and was not recorded in the 1840 census in Floyd county, Kentucky, so he must have passed away before the 1840 census was taken. |
