First Court Orders Floyd County Kentucky

                                                 First Courts Floyd County

                                                     December 27, 1799

The Governor of Kentucky appointed James Harris, Neely McGuire, Henry Stratton,
Goodwin Lycans,James Ewington and Barnet Wording as the first justices of the
peace for Floyd County.

On December 27,1799, the Governor of Kentucky appointed John McIntire,James
Young, and Jessee Spurlock as the first judges of the Court of Quarter Sessions
for Floyd County.

The Floyd County courthouse at Prestonsburg,the county seat-the first constructed
-was distroyed by fire in the latter part of the year 1807 or in the spring of 1808:
and such of the public records as are usually kept on file in the courthouses were
likewise destryed.  Consequently the earliest available records of said county date
from the spring of 1808.

                                               Earliest Court Orders Of Record

At a circuit court held for the circuit and county of Floyd at the house of William
James Mayo, in the town of Prestonsburg the court house having being (having been)
latley destroyed by fire, on Monday the 18th day of April, 1808.

Present: the Honorable John Graham and Alexander Lackey, Esquires, Assistant
Judges, David Brown, Gent., having made it appear to the satisfaction of the court that
he had obtained a licence to practice as an attorney at law; whereupon he qualified and
took the oath prescribed by the act of the General Assembly in the case made and
provided and hath leave to practice in this court.

Abraham Beavers, foreman, Jacob Slusher, Richard Priest, James Ratliff, John Murphy
Richard Damron, Tandy Stratton, John Branham, John Hatcher, James P. Harris, Harris
Wilson, Alex Young, Thomas Brown, James Young and  Robert  Brown were  sworn  and
empanneled  as a grand  jury  of  inquest for the body of this circuit. who, after having
received  a  charge  from  William  P.  Flemings,  Gent.,  retired  to  consult  on  their
presentments  and  after  some  time  returned  into  court  and  having  made  no
presentments were discharged. Ordered that this court adjourn until tomorrow morning
9 o'clock.

At a Circuit Court held for Floyd Circuit at the house of Joseph Janes and Battis Jerome
in Prestonsburg on Monday the 26th day of June, 1808:

Present;  The Honorable John Graham and Alexander Lackey, Esquires, Assistant Judges,
Abram Beavers,foreman, Michael Millons, John Hatcher, John S. Baisden, Hiram Stratton
John Damron, Moses Preston, R. Damron, Richard Priest, John Sellards, John Brown,
James P. Harris, Edward Dorton, Tandy Stratton, Joseph Ford, M. Edwards, were sworn and
empanneled a Grand Jury, and was charged by H. C. Bruce, Esq: retired to consult on their presentiments and after some time returned and presented***
Court adjourned till tomorrow 9 o'clock.

At a court  held  for  Floyd  County  at  the  house  of  Joseph  Janes  and  Battis  Jerome in
Prestonsburg  the court house having being (having been) latley destroyed by fire on Monday
the 16th day of May, 1808:
Present: James Patton, Thomas C. Brown, John Brown, Thomas Evans, and John Back,
Esquires, Gentlemen Justices.

At a court held for Floyd County at the house of Joseph Janes and Battis Jerome in
Prestonsburg on Monday the 24th day of October, 1808:
Present: The  Worshipful  James  Patton,  Thomas  C.  Brown,  George  Belsher, and
John  Hammonds, Esquires, Gentlemen Justices.

Daniel Peyton produced in court a commission from under the hand of Charles Scott,
Esqr., Governor of Kentucky, with the seal of the Commonwealth thereto affixed,
appointing him a Justice of the Peace in and for this country: whereupon he took,
as well the oaths to support the constitution of the United States and of this state,
as the oaths by the acts of the Assembly in that case made and provided; whereupon
he took his seat accordingly.

Samuel Pack, John Sullards, Edward Dorten, Thomas Auxier, John Pack (or Back)
James Brown, James Allen, Nathan Preston, and Joseph Ford. Verdict returned for $100
