Survival knives are probably the most important tool in your survival gear. After all, you can do a lot to survive in the wilderness using them. If you want to buy one, make sure you buy the best survival knife. consider these things to get it done.
It is the portion of the blade that extends down into the handle. The blade and the tang are one solid piece of steel. A full tang, that goes all the way back to the base of the handle, is considered the best for a quality survival knife. Why? Because a full tang gives the entire knife strength.
The handle varies. Some are made from polymer, others are hard rubber. Things to avoid: hollow handle and compass in the handle. A hollow handle means that the knife doesn’t have full strength. And a compass in the handle can mess up your grip on the knife.
Generally, survival knives come in two types of steel: carbon or stainless. Which one is the better one? No one knows exactly. However, they have main differences.
Stainless steel is virtually indestructible. It can take a beating and will last a long time without rusting. However, many people say that stainless blades lose an edge quicker.
On the other hand, carbon steel knives are known to hold a good edge longer than stainless steel. But, it will rust faster quicker in the elements.
There are two common designs, straight blade or serrated. A straight blade knife is better for chopping wood. It is also easier to sharpen. If you don’t have a whetstone, you can use a smooth stone to sharpen a straight blade. A serrated edge, on the other hand, will need a special sharpener.
Most survival knives fall within the range of 6” to 12”. Any less will not be big enough to do things you will have to do in survival situations, such as chopping wood. Just keep in mind not to buy a knife that is too big to handle and carry effectively. It would be more of a hindrance than a tool.
